We understand that coming to the vet can be stressful for pets and their people, so we have deliberately designed our hospital, our processes and the way we care for patients to make their experience as calm and comfortable as possible.

But Gawler Animal Hospital has also always been about people, relationships and being part of the local community.

Our history

Many of our clients have been coming to us for more than twenty years and have watched the practice grow from its beginnings as Gawler South Small Animal Hospital.

In 2010, Dr David MacPhail purchased the practice and began an exciting period of growth and development. Dr Steve Crouch joined the practice at the same time, and together they developed the vision for the hospital we have today.

In August 2016, we moved from our original premises in Fourth Street into our purpose-built hospital on Adelaide Road. The new hospital was designed to provide a high standard of veterinary care while also creating a welcoming environment for pets, their owners and our team.

As the practice continued to grow, so did the hospital. In 2021, we completed a major extension, adding additional dog wards, an ultrasound suite, an exotics suite, more consulting rooms, storage and parking. We also created a dedicated cat waiting area, separate from our dog waiting area.

Today, Gawler Animal Hospital has a highly skilled team of veterinarians, veterinary nurses, technicians and customer care professionals, with a broad range of experience and areas of special interest.

Our hospital is accredited to provide a high standard of veterinary care, and we are also accredited by the International Society of Feline Medicine as a gold-standard Cat Friendly Clinic. These accreditations reflect our commitment to maintaining high standards of care, facilities, training and patient wellbeing.

Caring for the whole patient

Our approach to veterinary care goes beyond treating an illness or injury.

We consider the emotional wellbeing of our patients as an important part of their care. Our team receives regular training in Fear Free practices, and we have Delta-qualified and Fear Free-accredited team members who help us continue to improve the way we care for our patients.

We have separate cat waiting areas and consult rooms, a dedicated cat ward with comfortable hiding spaces, and we use treats, toys and LickiMats to help make consultations more positive. For nervous dogs, we can offer garden consultations away from the busy clinic environment and other dogs.

Our hospital patients also have individual care and medication protocols designed to keep them as comfortable and settled as possible during their stay.

We provide comprehensive veterinary care, from routine health checks and preventative care through to complex medical cases, surgery, dentistry, diagnostic imaging and hospitalisation.

We also have particular expertise in feline and exotic animal care, because we know that every species and every individual patient has different needs.

Most importantly, we take the time to listen, explain and understand what is important to you and your pet.
